I'm writing this late Wednesday night after reflecting on a powerful midweek service. God was moving. The Spirit was present in a heavy yet light way, so many burdens were lifted tonight. A dozen new guests, people flooding the altar, and a powerful word from Psalms 72 was preached by our friend Pastor Jack Arellano.
We learned about what seems to be David's last recorded prayer. The last verse says,
"This concludes the prayers of David son of Jesse." After reading this, I jokingly said to pastor Isai, "And David never prayed again."
That was a joke, of course! Surely enough, David prayed until he took his last breath. But it got me thinking, "What will be my last prayer? What will I ask of the Lord?" And it seems at a first glance that David's prayer was for his son Solomon as he was about to ascend the throne and become Israel's 3rd king. His prayer is powerful and calls his son to rule in justice, righteousness, in worldwide renown and so much more.
At a second glance, we can see how this prayer transcends David's son Solomon's reign and points us to Jesus' reign, Jesus, who is known as the 'Son of David', a descendant of David's lineage who would indeed come as king to rule in perfect justice and righteousness.
Wow, what if we started thinking, and maybe even writing what we want our last recorded prayer to be? Would it be all about our glory or comfort or concerns, or would we seek to bring glory to Jesus in our lives and in the lives of our children and disciples? I pray it's the latter. Let's be thinking about our final prayer so we may live it out today!
